'Internet Merchant Account'

A lot of PSPs seem to require your business has an 'Internet Merchant Account'. However, there are others (Paypal, I think) that don't.

What exactly is the advantage of using a PSP that requires a Merchant Account vs. not using?

It is usually much cheaper to use a combination of merchant account and PSP than to just use a PSP, you can sometimes get paid more quickly.

It is usually much easier to set up worldpay, paypal and the like.
