More on Actinic and Fasthosts

At my wits' end here trying to set up an Actinic site on a Fasthosts Linux server. Depsite using exactly the settings recommended by both Actinic and Fasthots, and every variant on it that I can think of, I consistently run into the error 'Unable to move to the acatalog directory "../" on the FTP server possibly due to a mistake in the Path from CGI-BIN to acatalog Directory field. '

The puzzling thing is that when running the network setup wizard, the settings seem to pass all the tests - albeit the FTPPATHFROMCGITOCATALOG field comes up as empty, rather than the '../acatalog' that's the recommended setting. But whether I leave it empty, use ../acatalog, or any other variant I can think of, I just can't get past this stage.

Has ANYONE successfully set up an Actinic site on a Fasthosts Linux server? If so, I would be really grateful if you could share the successful settings!

This thread might help. It seems to suggest you try a couple of things.

1. Going ahead and doing an upload anyway as sometimes the test with fasthost fails without reason.

2. checking that cgi is actually enabled when it isn't despite saying it is.

Many thanks for your fast reply!

I did initially suffer the cgi-bin / script enabled error, but have now resolved this - apparently it's a standard thing that when setting up a Linux server on Fasthosts you have to disable and then re-enable the scripts before they will work properly! Anyway, did that and got over that hurdle.

I have been trying to upload without 'Test' as well, but get exactly the same error message and the upload aborts.

Message from Fasthosts support, after I sent them my settings:

"I have imported the settings from your Actinic text into our Actinic test machine and completed the test settings with no errors."

What the hell's going on here? What's causing this error?

Having been following recent communications on the above problem. I am using Catalog v.7 and tried over the last few days to set up with three different ISPs (not including FASTHOSTs though) and I am having exactly the same problem as all you guys. Has anyone found an answer yet because I am my wits end too!

Which strikes me that this is not just a problem with Fasthosts!

There are plenty of sites being hosted with FASTHOSTS, with from what can see the best results being gained from Linux with them, for which the same can be said about other hosts, with the majority of issues being with Win2003 servers it looks like, but then it also has to be said that some hosts (even on here) host purely on Windows without any issues!

As you are not with FASTHOSTs, then speak with your host to find out which OS you are on and then drop it here in the forum and no doubt/hopefully someone should be with them which will be able to provide some support and advise on settings for you.

All three ISPs are running Linux servers. The one I normally use and have other sites hosted with is Easyspace - who actually sell and recommend Actinic.
Their support desk have been unable to help though since we checked all the settings and they appear to be correct.

As a quick check, have you tried disabling any firewalls you have running and then trying the web | configure, just as a quick test to see if it gets thru that way, which if it does, then switch them back on and fault find through your firewall settings - just an idea...

Whoopee, seems to be working for me too! I had actually tried disabling the firewall, but it seems it has to be done before you launch Actinic.

I'm using Norton Internet Security, so it seems that's what's been causing this issue - how about you Poppy?

OK, so (hopefully!) final message on this topic; anyone know what setting in Norton Internet security is causing the problem? I can currently get the upload if I completely disable the Norton firewall, but can't seem to find a solution that lets me set and exception in Norton. I've set the 'catalog' program to 'permit all' under categories 'File Transfer' and 'General', but it still seems to block access. How can I get Norton to let Actinic through?

The other common problem with uploading is the router that you may be using. There is some info on the forum about that somewhere, especially a Netgear one. I have been known to start the upload on a dial up and complete on broadband. Daft I know but sometimes this is the only way it uploads. Other times it may upload with no problems.

I've had Actinic running through Norton Internet Security of FastHosts servers for months with no issues. Last uploaded on Monday...

Then today, same error and solution as you have described above. I think the latest download from Norton has caused this problem. typical!

We are having real upload problems similar to what has been reported - we are doing a website for a client (their host is Dataflame) and everything has to be published into a "public_html" folder for it to work properly. The last site we did for a different client uploaded onto the server without any problems as it went straight onto the root, not a seperate folder.

We're struggling with the field settings in Actinic to publish the files correctly. At one point the actinic folder was appearing outside of public_html so the web pages didnt work. Then sometimes it was creating the Actinic folder within cgi-bin - which is wrong too.

And sometimes when we test the network settings it doesnt like the pathways we attribute to it and gives an error message.

These are the network setup fields which we cant get right:

We're not sure what to put in here. We know that it all has to go into the public_html folder on the server and we know the cgi-bin url is: http://www.ourwebsite.co.uk/cgi-bin
