Free shipping charges for members

Here's a simple way to create a diferent shipping charge for account members:

1. Create a product 'Free Shipping for members' that only members can purchase.

2. Set the weight to be more than a normal order could realistically be.

3. in your shipping charge table, create a weight band for anything above that weight and set the charge to £0.00 (or whatever).

4. Tell members to be sure and add this to their cart to qualify for the free shipping option. (until I can figure a way to do this automatically for members).

et voila.

Is there any way to have this "FREE Shipping Product" added automatically to customer under a certain price schedule? For example if there was a single "Add Selection To Cart" button and the product quantity for that item could default to 1. This way customers in those price schedules would not have to remember to select the item.

I keep trying to think of ways to do this but haven't come up with a good solution yet. It isn't easy, that's for sure.
