Credit Card Start Date

How do I make the start date an optional field when entering credit/debit card details in checkout?

When I check the boxes in configure payment method, checkout insists on making data entry mandatory.

Just realised what I'd done :o

If you set *all* the cards to have a start date, then of course it sets the field to be mandatory.

I feel really stupid now :o
