Even though I have set up a "North America" tax zone and the "Tax 1" shows "No tax levied" and my "No tax levied" tax has a rate of 0% (this is the only way the system would let me set up separate tax zones for the UK, EU and North America) VAT is applied to orders where the country of origin - as I entered it in the checkout screen - is the USA.

How do I avoid having VAT applied to orders from the USA?

The sytem works ok for the other 2 zones - the UK and the EU where VAT is applied.

I deleted the North America tax zone as you suggested and put North America and Canada in the "No tax levied" zone. This seems to have cured the problem of VAT being charged on US customer purchases. Thank you for that

I also deleted all the states in the US and Canada and that seems to have solved the problem of being asked to include the state of a customer from the US when there was no opportunity to do so. Thank you for that Jont.
