Weird Problem with Customvars

I use customervars in my products to display rrp's & Savings.

i have done some formatting of the customvars in the templates.

i have discovered that when there is only one product in the sub-section the formating does not work

when there are more than one products the formatting works.

any ideas as to why this is happening?

i am at a loss. they both use the same templates as they inherit them from their parent section.
