Hi,

I have been playing around with the search function and have come up with a problem.

In order to have a compact product description in my main listing with a link to a full large description I have created the full version in a subsection within the main section and then created a duplicate also in the main section - I have then compacted the duplicate and put in a link to the full product description. I have then also used the duplicate in various other sections.

Eg a product is in the full product list but also in the list by price range, product type and brand.

When I do a search either from the main search page:

http://www.kmscameras.co.uk/acatalog/search.html

or this page:

http://www.kmscameras.co.uk/acatalog/Which_camera.html (using buttons mid way down)

the search returns the full product pages rather than the compact versions. I understand that this is because I have set the search settings to show product and not duplicates. But if i swop this around it will show 3 versions of the duplicates! :(

The only thing I can think of is limiting the search to the main listing section and showing duplicates...

Does anyone know if this can be done or of any other way around this?

Myles

Hi Myles, I'm afraid that there is no way around this.

The only thing you could do is rejig your duplicates so that your main product is one of your compact product layouts, rather than your full product layout.

Thanks Chris,

Would this give me issues for SEO as I have read in other threads that the engines tend to ignore the duplicates and list the original products? - this would mean the compacts would be picked up rather than the full products - I guess it may not be too much of an issue if I choose my wording well for the compacts... but there may not be enough words in there to keep the SEs happy... going to have to give it some more thought.

Cheers,

Myles

Search engines see main products and duplicates in exactly the same way - it's all just text on a page. I don't think the change I recommended will affect this at all.

Ok - thanks I'll give it a go then.
