View Full Version : Attributes and different stock codes

I cannot figure out a way to assign a different stock code (reference) to each attribute of an item. EG, a red T-shirt is stock code XXX0001R, blue is XXX0001B, green is XXX001G.
We just want one product displayed, with a drop down selection for colour, is this possible? It looks like we need a separate product for each colour, size, etc ... Is there a way around this?
Thanks,
Ben
Hi Ben
You will need to include a component at the level above the attribute. In the Component dialogue you can associate the various permutations to hidden products in your catalog, each one with their individual product reference.
For further instructions, search for Associated Products in the Help files.

That will be a no then!
Hi Alan
No, the answer is yes! ;) But I probably didn't explain it well.
Attributes and choices themselves do not have a reference, but if associated with products that are hidden on the web site, then the reference numbers will be carried through to the choice. IOW if a customer orders a choice that has been associated to a hidden product, then the reference for this orderline is that of the hidden product and if stock monitoring is set up, it will be the stock level of the hidden product that is depleted.
Hope this is clearer.

OK, thanks Ben,
I have added 3 hidden products and then created a generic product with components for the different colours, associated back to the hidden products.
(You mentioned to put the components a level above the attributes, but you cannot have attributes at all if you have associated products??!)
However it's not what I want. What I get now is the generic product listed on the page (OK), but with 3 tick-boxes for the colour selection (I want a drop down or radio button, so they can't order a T-shirt that is blue AND red!). Also what if I also want a size (S,M,L) selection too? (Yes I have 9 different product codes)
When added to the cart it displays the generic product and the component - is it possible to only display the component?
Thanks Ben,
Ben :-)
Hi Ben
The setup is:
(Product)
- (Component)
-- Colour (Attribute)
--- Blue (Choice)
--- Red (Choice)
Once the attribute and choices are added below the component, there will be a Permutations tab in the Component dialogue. Click the Fill List button on this tab and the table will be populated with your choices. You can then associate each individual choice with a hidden product and set the price to be taken from the associated product.

Right, here we go, my first post :)
Hi,
I've looked through this thread, and others and I still can't get the result that I want. For example I have a product (BCD ) that comes in two sizes, with two different codes.
I want to display a picture of the product with a choice of the two sizes . I can display the BCD OK as a product and using the component and attribute stuff described above I can almost get what I want.
However what I get is:-
1)The main image shows a product reference, I'm not sure how to turn that off just for the main image but not for the hidden products , and I can't import a product with no reference. I don't want the reference shown with main product image and description. If I turn that off in business settings it doesn't show in the cart either.
2)When I click on 'Add to cart' I get the correct price, but it shows as two items ie the BCD and the size . How do I get to either combine the two descriptions or just just show the component/attribute/choice line ?
eg in the cart I get
21820 Glide 3D Pro 1
21820 200 Size: S 1 €450.00
I just want one line for the item
Thanks

aha, 2nd post. Mostly sorted thanks. I found the right boxes to tick. Except, how do I get it not to show the Product Reference with main picture/description
Hi Mike how do I get it not to show the Product Reference with main picture/description You'll find there is a checkbox in Business Settings | Options called 'Hide Product Reference in Online Catalog'. Check this and they will disappear.

Thanks. I was hoping to be able to only turn off the reference on the product description page but still have it shown in the trolley. Eg so it picks up the reference of the hidden product not the parent product. However, the customer is happy not to have the reference displayed in the trolley so that suits me ;)
I was hoping to be able to only turn off the reference on the product description page but still have it shown in the trolley. No problem. In that case, edit your ProductLine template and comment out NETQUOTEVAR:PRODUCTREF. This will hardcode references out of the products page, but the cart will include them as normal ... as long as you remember to untick the box in Business Settings ;)

Hi
If your still having problems, take a look at my site and ad a few items the the basket, you should find it does what your looking for. It only shows the correct part number not the product refrances with no parent part.
If you need help drop me a line, I spent hours getting this working.
Also if you change any templates remember to save it as something else or your change everything that uses that template.
Cheers
Darren :)

I've read through this post and asked the same question recently.
Now, as far as I understand, I would have to create a hidden product for each attribute I wanted to assign a reference code to. So with only 20 products and 4 attributes on each, that would be 80 hidden products.
Is this correct beacuse it seems like a hell of a lot of work to me?

that is correct, however you can copy and past products and change the product reference number and description. this is the easy way to do this when you have lots of similar products with slight different sizes or colours.
i have had to change my site recently so the comments i made earlier to see examples are not there now.

Hi garry
try doing it with 3500 products, drives you insane, but once its there then changes are pretty much every day things to do. I had to change the layout of our site because someone reported us to trading standards for not displaying VAt inclusive pricing, so i had to drop the attributes and list every product seperately. hence the laying out of products in compact rows.
Cheers
Darren :)
We have a product that will generate hidden products and permutations for you - it also makes it really easy to update stock levels. It is quite expensive (£350) so is probably only suitable where you have a lot of products that change frequently - it was written with clothing shops in mind where the entire stock changes with each season.
I have been thinking about offering a service where people send us a snapshot and then we create the permutations and components for a small charge (probably around £50). Does anyone think that this would be useful?
