Google API ?

I wanted to check my home page position for a keyword search in Google.

I went to Google, http://www.googlerankings.com/, and it requests that i get an API number.

I joined and at the minute struggling getting a number, however can anyone tell me what it is that I am signing up for ?

Soft answers please.

I just want to see how good or bad my page listig is based upon a search word?

Google API is a method of using the google database "direct" rather than using the search bar. Google do this to reduce the load on the servers by people using the database. If you do excessive ranking checks via the search bar google may block your IP. using the API poses no risk this is why the online tool you are using asks you to use API.
