I think a couple of their examples are wrong - they say that CD's is wrong because it is a plural (and I would normally type CDs myself), but I think the apostrophe is acceptable in CD's because CD is an abbreviation, as is MOT.

www.businessballs.com:
"Apostrophes are generally considered optional but are not 'preferred' (which basically means that fewer people will regard the usage as correct) in pluralised abbreviations such as OAPs, and tend not to be used at all in well known abbreviations such as CDs and MPs. Increasingly, apostrophes in common abbreviations such as CD's and MP's are considered by many to be incorrect, and so on balance are best avoided"
So not best practice (as I say, I don't do it), but not actually wrong:p

And what about i.e. having a few full stops as it is short for "id est" ?
Mark H
10-Sep-2007, 11:40 AM
Yes - good point. I used to work in a large organisation where some punctuation (such as commas in addresses, and full stops in i.e and e.g.) was frowned upon in letters and reports because it didn't fit the style guide - i.e. didn't "look good" - old (bad) habits die hard.:o
And so to topic.

Sorry to explore even deeper depths of tedium, but what do the release letters actually stand for?
fergusw
10-Sep-2007, 12:52 PM
I believe they actually relate to an alphabetical incremental release of code changes for the Developers to use and track.
From memory:
8.5.1 HFUA
The 8 refers to version number
The 5 refers to database updates i.e. different database structure
The 1 refers to final patch/version release number, incrementally
I would guess that the 4 letters refer to their internal developer tracking
i.e. The very first one would be something like AAAA and each one would refer to an element of the software build e.g. first letter refers to the GUI, second to script changes, third to login changes and so on....
I'm sure someone at Actinic would happily share their internal development techniques, processes and tracking methods ;)

Duncan Rounding
10-Sep-2007, 01:13 PM
No I think it's to do with who did the particular build.
1st letter - First letter of country of origin
2nd letter - First letter of given name
3rd letter - First letter of family name
4th letter - Incremental code letter of build

fergusw
10-Sep-2007, 01:19 PM
Maybe.....
or......
A is for "A bug found"
B is for "Bug fixed"
C is for "Can't see the bug"
D is for "Didn't you already fix the bug!"
E is for "Evidently there are more bugs than we thought"
F is for "Fixed it. At last"
G is for "Great. One more patch should do it"
H is for "Help. Bugs are everywhere"
I is for "Infestation!"
J is for "Just stop with the bugs already.....!"
K is for "Kill the bugs! Kill the damn bugs!!"
etc etc ....
:)
This could be applied to most software developers. :) It's a bugs life!

Fun with lettering: The Actinic way!
The lettering thing is a dull as you imagine it is.
The first letter stands for the year - 2000 was A, 2001 was B and 2007 is H.
The second and third letters are to do with the month and the day - which would work really well if there were 26 days in the month. So you start with HAAA on the first of January 2007, and then it goes HABA, HACA etc. but as soon as you get to the 27th of January it goes to HBAA and then rattles through the year quite merrily.
The last letter is the build on that day. So if there are 2 builds in a day, the second build will end with a 'B'.
The only slight hiccup caused by the scheme was when we released a custom build to a big important client called 'BETA'. It caused a few confused phonecalls...
jont
10-Sep-2007, 04:37 PM
a big important client
Best not let marketing read that ... ALL clients are important :p
So the version we are all working is really the 8th January build then

Are we not on HADA.... April Fool's Day!!!
The lettering thing is a dull as you imagine it is.
Oh, so Chris, that's not fun then, oh, right, no worries, I'll find fun somewhere else, it'll be all right- I'll listen to Mika, he will cheer me up
... perhaps not, what other fakeries are there out there to cheer me up now that I know Actinic lettering isn't what life is all about?
Regards, well sort of, sorry about the puncuation grammer guys,
The sentiment is fine but surely HADA is January 4th.
It is a bit late for this but I think you meant HDMA. i.e day 91 - 1st April 2007 ;)

So if Actinic want to avoid real words in the build numbering they will need to watch out for these (http://www.scrabble.org.au/words/fours.htm).
After a persury review I suspect we would then only be able to have perhaps one or two builds in the next century.
OMG Duncan HUFA isn't there. On that basis would that mean in the next century it could come back to haunt us

Well actually i was away by the sea.
My version numbers are actually the names of comic book villains, from the DC universe. The current release version is due to be called 'Toyman', all these villains have at some point come into contact with Superman.
I was working on some php actually, you'll find it in another thread. its another way to bypass that pesky 20 year old perl linking system.

get PHP to read the product description on his XBOX installation
wierdly, i did experiment at getting an xbox to act as a server, copying the actiniccatalog.mdb to its drive every few minutes and then hosting actinet to a room of 'pooters. worked fine. and diddnt require the actinic computer to be turned on to let people access their data either.
seems it runs natively on the xbox. nintendo ds, sony psp, gamecube, dreamcast and best of all, an arcade machine.
all the above can run linux versions of the server tech used in actinet. :p
jont
12-Sep-2007, 07:19 AM
Gabe - do you know the line in the .pl script to pass the postcode through to the order?
I have just installed v8.5.1 on a Sponge Bob Square Pants game (free with McDonalds Happy Meals) but I am missing the postcode on the order - everything else is working fine (once I converted the images into 2bit pixel art)
Darren B
12-Sep-2007, 07:33 AM
Jont, try this
$sPostCode = substr($sPostCode, -4, 4); # just take the last 4 digits and parse to crabworth or patrick. Sponge bob will collect later
gabrielcrowe
12-Sep-2007, 09:27 AM
sadly, a known incompatibility with crabby patties makes this hack impossible.
seems it runs natively on the xbox. nintendo ds, sony psp, gamecube, dreamcast and best of all, an arcade machine.
And it will probably reside quite happily on a Sky+ box and run if only you could access it across a LAN/WAN.
