Hi,

Does anyone know a way for Actinic to automatically redirect customers viewing an invalid html link to the site home or index.html page? Can we implement a custom 404.html with a redirect tag or does Actinic have another clever method.

I ask this because we are a new site and have found it necessary to change our categories as the product lines expand however the previous pages were already indexed by the search engines.

Thanks

David

Not a good idea, because then you would not be returning a 404 error.

Better idea is to download a copy of sitemap.html from your website, rename as 404.html, amend to include an explanation

'You tried to visit a page we have either removed or renamed, please select one of our current pages from the list below'

and upload by adding to additional files in Actinic.

Bang on....

A customised error page is the most overlooked aspect of any website IMHO.

With it done correctly with up to date information and a polite oops message, you will entice the visitor to continue on within your site.

Without it...they will simply say "huh?" and move on.

Of course you could leave the current page names in place and only add new pages for the extra products - thus no page will be removed.

But you should always have a 404 in place anyway
