add special shipping details to confirmation email

is it possible to make the confirmation email show the special shipping instructions that the shopper adds during the checkout stage?

In the Advanced User Guide, there is a section called 'Adding an extra field into the customer email' that tells you how to put the 'User Definable 3' prompt (in the 'General Information' section') into the customer email. Could you maybe use this field for the special shipping information?
