Can I upload a test site, and still have my live site?

I can't get my head round test mode. I'm about to change to a psp (securetrading), so need to be able to test the changes on a test site, and ideally keep the actual site live. If this can be done, what do I need to do?

Sorry if this seems like a basic question - I have done a search on here and in the knowledge base - but can't seem to find anything.

Hi Nick

When you go to 'Web | Switch To Test Mode' your online store will be uploaded to a folder called 'test' within your 'acatalog' folder, and your cgi scripts will be renamed to have a '9' at the start of the filenames.

You can then test your store and the new PSP, but you won't be able to upload changes to your live store, or download orders from your live store while you are running in test mode.
