Hi
There's some stuff in the Startup Guide about changing the page names for sections to make them meaningful to search engines. Is it worth doing the same for the extended information pages rather than keeping the default page names?
Cheers
Paul

if you think about it you dont really want populs indexed so the answer is no. This has been discussed before so searching should provide more discussions on the subject

Google has indexed some of my extended info pages (opens in the same window). As there is no navigation facility in the extended info area (V9.0.2), If someone lands on it, there is nothing they can do:confused:- any suggestions on this, please?

Look in the AUG for details on having extended info pages using same layout as the rest of the site.
Around Page 24 IIRC.

It is worth putting a "home" link on extended info pages. Switch to design tab, click on the extended link and it previews... you can then add a simple <a href="n"> link in the HTML

Bin them and use them for what they were designed for - they are useless for SEO

As Lee says, why not use the same layout in your extended info pages.
This is one of my extended info pages using that format.http://www.qualitysilver.co.uk/acatalog/Tungsten-Silver-Ring-TURM10.html
Kind regards

If you use them, then this is indeed the way to go without question.

Hi all, I've done something very similar by using my outer layout around each popup and having popups set to open in the same page - result = seamless user expereience and signs of a really nice site.
HOWEVER!
As the extended info page contains all the detail for each of my products I'd like to have more meaningful description and keywords tags but can't find anyway to do this. Currently they are fed by the products homepage rather than the sub-section that they are in.
Could anyone advise please? sure this is relevant to the above post too - if anyon goes down this route they are sure to be asking similar question in time, especially in relation to SEO.
Any pointers would be very much appreciated.

Double posting will not get you an answer any quicker - I was going to help but

The way that I did this was to use a template for a particular group of products and add keywords and meta details based around say a dozen products. I do have a lot of different layouts but each is very different and customized to that product group.
For example this layout was used for our Silver Sweetie Bracelets (http://www.qualitysilver.co.uk/acatalog/Silver-Sweetie-Bracelet-BR378H.html) whilst this one was used for our Kit Heath (http://www.qualitysilver.co.uk/acatalog/Kit-Heath-Silver-White-Diamonds-D773.html) silver jewellery.
You will see that both are completely different and allow for different images and information to be shown, if you check the source code you will see that meta details and keywords can be configured to each product as well.

Thanks for all feedback - I have looked all over around page 24 V9 AUG - can't find any ref to extended info layouts:confused:
Maybe it's time for a new pair of specs........seems to be info about snapshots, etc ....??

V8 AUG i was referring to.

It's page 81 of the V9 guide. I was using the 'Name and info text displayed below image' layout so I had to modify the 'Includes add to cart button' layout a bit further after doing the changes in the AUG.
Extended info page after mods:

What's the best way to deal with the meta tags then? As a previous poster says, they default to the sites ones.

Can't you use the 'title' variable as a meta tag or something? It's a long time since we ditched ext info for SPP but I did get the meta title and description working OK when we had it.
Best advice is to not go down this route though. At some point you will need to spend 2 months restructuring the whole site to do it properly. Go for product per section if you want SPP. If you don't want SPP then just create really good sections and have ext info for photos etc.

Hi,
I know this is an older thread, but..
I've tried the Extended Info page changes from V8 aug, the preview looks fine, but when I've uploaded it just shows the old extended info page (without add-to-cart). But it does show on same page etc.

Click on the first image of a black cartridge.
I've tried upload and a full refresh
I'm missing something obvious but it is Friday afternoon...

Yes it could be Friday madness... but TBH i am confused by your Q
are you saying the top 2 products on this page http://www.mediaprovisions.co.uk/acatalog/Inkjet_CD_Printer_Cartridges.html - on clicking product image should go to ext info page with add to cart?
they dont for me...

Its definitely that Friday madness...
It may have changed since I made that post as I continued to fiddle with it, sorry.
I've since been trying it out on another product but step by step, and I think it was my copy-n-paste technique and I'd screwed up the html....
Looks like I've found the solution after all.
Thanks

Maybe the Extended Info Pages are relevant from an SEO point, maybe not. Today I looked at webmaster tools on google which told me I had many title tag error issues (duplicate titles). After looking at these it turns out they are all ext info pages. So the question needs to be asked should I make sure the ext info pages are titled properly? Maybe the home link as mentioned on this thread could be a good idea.
I don't know if these pages are irrelevant for SEO. Maybe I'll email google.

You get duplicate titles as the extended info pages inherit from the parent, they don't have the facility to add your own on a standard install. That in essence is one of the main reasons why they are a junk solution. Scrap them completely and use the better SPP approach.
