no automatic selections for shipping and paying

Does anybody know how I can change my drop down menus for shipping and payment methods, so that there is nothing selected as a default i.e. the customer must choose a method and recieves a prompt if he/she tries to click on next without selecting a method.

Unfortunately I don't think that there is any (easy) way to do this. Other threads have addressed reordering the options which affects which option is selected by default; i.e. the first in the list. But I can't think of anyway to avoid a default selection and enforcing that the client make a choice without some serious script editing (both Perl and Javascript).
