For those that don't understand, please go to www.twatter.com
Only kidding, it lost me too, i presumed it was for telling tales by the name of it, but i don't think it is. We could ask twitter what it is, that could work?

Reminds me of when we first met blockifs and we all kept doing them the wrong way round but didn't want to say. I then came out the closet about it and the world admitted the same lol.

As far as I can tell, it's for people who like to talk non stop but brought into the internet age.
So people can say things non stop on twitter and the beauty of it is that no one has to listen to them.
Mike
Edit: OK, I'm probably underselling it. Think of it as a dating agency for those who feel the need to talk all the time and those who feel sad and lonely unless they can hear chatting in the background. Sounds like a great place to advertise certain products such as unlimited mobile phone deals and light boxes.

pmsl @ Mike
That sounds like someone I know
*glances briefly at Ben*
:p
I can't get into Twitter at all. I signed up but, as anyone can see, I'm not exactly active!
If I twittered as much as I could do, I'd probably crash their server :D
An example of how I have found it useful, for a while now I have wanted a way of getting a quick update on the latest news but find that if you go to a newspaper, other than the main headlines it tends to be mostly based on celebrity stuff, which quite frankly I find very boring, on here I have subscribed to the skynews feed and every so often I get a list of the latest headlines, which so far has been just what I was looking for. I also found a nice recipe for adding beetroot to your biscuits - not on the news pages though.
I would say however that the Mole End page will only be interesting to people wanting to see what new products we are working on, get hold of the early betas for our plugins and get the inside gossip on the mole end staff.
I have to say that when I first saw twitter I didn't see the point of it, but now, I'm a convert. I'm watching Stephen Fry on twitter (and he is watching me ... ok, so he watches everyone that watches him, I'm still special), he is filming a new documentary in the jungle , it's quite fascinating.

The simplicity of Twitter is in its single question "what are you doing"? However its far from a simple social network tool:
http://webworkerdaily.com/2007/03/15/eight-ways-twitter-is-useful-professionally/
The great thing for me is the minute by minute info for almost anything related to my followers, for example I know Expression Engine (CMS) has a bug with its rendering, 20% of web surfing is now done with FireFox and Mike Golding is in 4th place in the Vendee Globe.
Its also a first class news channel, the recent earthquake in LA was reported infinitely quicker on Twitter than any traditional news outlet.
Also http://search.twitter.com is one of the most powerful search tools I have come across, its hugely revealing.
Twitter is huge and growing by the day, my theory is people talk and we can all choose to be part of that conversation or not.

Hmmm. twittering.
I guess it only works if you want people to know what you're up to.
Or even if you do, that you have something worth saying or seeing.
That probably rules me out then... next!

Slightly off-topic but I find it kind of ironic that we have a huge problem with identity theft these days and yet individuals reveal so much about themselves on the very public bebo and myspace sites.

Have been using Twitter for a couple of months now and is great for sharing and picking up links and bits of info from like minded professionals and people with similar interests.
My website is an online food producer and supplier and I connect via twitter to other food producers, farmers markets, SEO specialist and lots of web2.0 people and now even Actinic.
Whilst initially skeptical, I am now completely converted, journalist sometimes even twitter looking for feedback and interviews for articles, I responded to one only last week and got some press coverage out of it and website hits within 24 hours. see article here (http://paganum.wordpress.com/2008/11/06/wordpress-magazine-interview/)
It's another part of social networking and Web 2.0 whilst it may not suit everyone it is good for me...

I just thought I would bump this post as a few of you have since joined the Twitterverse and I was wondering how you were finding it.
Since we started talking about Twitter a fair few things have happened:
Barack Obama is now President-elect, by March of this year, he had become the service's most popular poster.
Dell recently sold $500,000 worth of refurbished PCs using Twitter.
So, how are those of you using it finding it, also are you just using it for personal chatter or are you thinking about using it as a business tool?

Im still learning it, has a few quirks but im guessing mine is more chatter at the moment, not really looked at the business side of things
TraceyHand

actually, I considered using it as a business tool or even as a way of updating customers by allowing them to follow me (not my current twitter ID, obviously LOL  )
I'd be very wary of competition keeping tabs though...in the same was as you/we keep tabs on competition
There's a fine line between using it to watch others and allowing yourself to be watched, I think.
I can see many uses for it, aside from the obvious 'waffle', but I'm not quite brave enough to go all out yet
I'm finding twitter very useful, I'm listing details of all of our betas on there now and also having a laugh with a few of the regulars from here. It's a clever tool, deceptively useful.

Yesterday, I posted a twitter about growing veggies and I got two new followers, one trying to sell me shampoo made from carrots and the other selling a gardening program - no hards sells mind you, they just started to follow me. So if you have a target market and monitor the twitter search on relevant keywords then you can find people that might be interested - kites for example might be a good search for you to follow - for interest and for business as well.

So, not so much 'cult' type followers, more like people following you down the street trying to sell you something.
I still can't quite get the appeal off this.

I'm loving twitter. It's a 'take it or leave it' form of distraction and/or chat.
kinda like text messaging a large group of people or individuals within that group, I suppose.
It's definitely the least distracting (ermm..mostly LOL) of my daily distractions, yet it makes me feel like I'm part of a larger group (which is a great thing in the isolation of my office, I can tell you!)
