OK my 7 year old did his homework this weekend and today i notice a correction from the teacher. I think the teacher has it wrong
The questions are similar but this is one
"How many 2cm pieces of tape can you cut from a 10cm piece tape"
Ciaran wrote 5
this has been corrected to 5cm, i have replied in his comments book that these have been corrected and are now wrong.
To me the answer was obvious, however my wife questioned me about it saying they were wrong, knowing i checked them but when i asked her to read the question and answer it she also said it has been corrected incorrectly.
I guess my question is, how do others read this sort of question

The pedant in me can't resist this one....
I read the intent of the question as an attempt to ascertain the quantity of pieces, not a measure of length of the pieces, hence 5 would be the correct answer.

Teacher wrong, you are right. Oh god I despair.
Recently I witnessed a teacher writing the word "shoping" on the white board. She stood back, added another p, then rubbed it out, and left it as "shoping".
Now a whole class of 30 seven year olds believes that's how you spell what you do when you go out to the shops and spend money :(

Thats exactly how i read the question, they did it with another aswell.
"how many 10 litre buckets can you get from a 50 litre barrel" he answered 5 they corrected it to 5l

To get the teacher's answers, the questions would have to be:
"If you cut a 10cm piece tape into 5 equal pieces, how long would each piece be?"
and
"If you divide 50 litres of water equally into 10 buckets, how many litres would be in each bucket?"

"How many 2cm pieces of tape can you cut from a 10cm piece tape"
Maybe its me & a foggy memory but back in the day my teachers would have asked.
How many pieces of tape, 2cm long, can you cut from a piece of tape 10cm long?

Says it all - I remember when I was doing my Highers I physically had to prove the teacher wrong - in that a wooden box-shaped thing with a door on the front is called a 'cupboard' - not a 'cuboard'.
Nice article in the paper last week - the reasons why dsylxiea is a myth. Makes you wonder.

My 11 year old has just read the OP and summed it up.
"The teacher is thick!"

A deliberate error of course. Go to the top of the class.

Out of the mouths of babes, eh?
(although I'm sure your 11 year old wouldn't appreciate being called a 'babe'!)

Either way, the answers would be 5 or 2cm.
5cm is not an answer to either interpretation.
And while we're at it, I was told recently that teachers are pronouncing H as haitch, not aitch.

rubbish :p
Challenge them! Make sure they (or someone more senior to them!) KNOW they were wrong and then maybe, just maybe, they'll teach the next pupil correctly!!

Why have they singled out 10cm why can it not be 9.99999555 ?

Now I'm cross - all these things are a pet hate of mine.
Darren - the teacher should be asked to justify their correction, just to give him/her the opportunity, before you rap their knuckles with the ruler, slap the back of their knees, clip them round the ear and make them face the corner, outside the Head's office.
I'm calm, really

And my girl's. Hurray!
Awkwardly, my daughter is being taught in Welsh until 7, so I can't tell what the teacher has written, which rather deflates my automatic high dudgeon :D

This teacher needs to go back to school him/herself.
The fact that the questions start with "how many" means that the answer has to be a number not a measure - therefore 5 is correct.
To get to the question 5cm - the question would have had to be if you cut a 10cm piece of tape into 2 equal lengths what does each piece measure.

Relax Daz, you cant judge a person on one error.
Seriously.
:)
I actually admire the teaching profession, its a very difficult job nowadays in my opinion.

I completely agree - I think our primary is marvellous - a real commitment to the children and their learning.
However, there are standards and I think the Question in question and the 'Shoping' are sad proof that standards have fallen - these are both school errors, which seems to indicate the teachers involved weren't properly educated themselves....
So I really do feel we should challenge these failures - it can be done nicely of course - no need to be confrontational.

It must be very difficult being a teacher I agree. I cannot imagine trying to teach a group of children something at the same time as learning some basic English and Maths myself.
All joking apart, this could be a human error and very isolated, so hard to condemn. Instead of ripping him/her apart on a ecommerce forum, why don't we all go to the school and throw eggs and rotten tomatoes instead.

Get him to do what I did to my maths teacher when she gave me crap marks, all over the page I scrawled Mrs E*ans is a cow meaning to rub it/rip it out before handing it in next time, and guess what, I forgot so the next time not only did I get more crap marks but a lunch time detention, 100 lines and a clip round the ear from my copper of a dad.:eek:

I don't care what the excuses are, tbh.
There is NO excuse for it (especially as it happened not once, but TWICE!)
