I'm having a serious bother with Vista. I need to share a folder, more specifically, the actinic folder.

its inside the program files folder.

- its shared
- permissions 'everyone'
- firewall off, completely disabled.
- uac is off.

when i navigate to it, against all odds, i can see other folders, and edit their contents, but for this folder, i get 'access denied'.

can some vista user out there give me a hand? this evil operating system is making me cry.

Gabe did you set the folder/file sharing up 'the XP way', ie. to use Simple File Sharing?

Although you have set access to 'Everyone' on the network, what permissions have been granted for 'Everyone'?

The usual networking fix for Vista is:

Right click the Actinic folder, select Properties > Security

Select 'Everyone' in the list of usernames, then ensure the correct permissions you require are set (test initially with Full Control).

This is what happens when MS decide to throw in the SFS towel and not create a new 'Simple' way of sharing in Vista.

Are all your networked machines on Vista?

No, only the actinic machine, sadly.

I have been forced to use bad security, due to the rediculous way vista manages security and shares. You're right about the security thing. It seems i ahve to set this option twice, in the sharing and in the security tab, something i missed the first time. Its almost as badly designed as the 'network and sharing center'. wtf microsoft!

I'll be so pleased when i dont have to use it, and all the sheep migrate to w7.

Ah, fail.

Connecting an XP machine to a Vista host machine becomes nothing more than an epic fail. Wait it out, W7 will be here soonish. Or get off your ass and walk across the room and use a memory stick:p
