Just as we're going "live" our customer has informed us that some of the "products" , namely subscriptions, have an element of "vatability" in them. So if a subscription patment were £90, £70 would be non vatable, but £20 of it would be. Any ideas how we can approach this one?: (my first thought is to have a new VAT band of 20/90*17.5% and apply it to the £90, but as many of the "subscribers" will want to reclaim the VAT it's essential that the VAT element is clearly described on the receipt and Invoice)
All ideas gratefully received.
Thanks
Dave

We have the same problem in the world of optics.
Spectacles are only partially VATable. We set-up a separate VAT amount and applied this to all products in that category.
Seems to work and you can have the receipt list the different VAT amount separately I think – we don’t bother as most customers are retail so no need to claim VAT back.

Thanks James: much appreciated. I'd still be interested though as to how we can show this "partial" VAT amount on the invoices. Again any ideas much appreciated. Thanks again James.

If you split your product into the main product and a hidden product at the other tax rate then your main product can have a non-optional component, associated with the hidden product, each at a different tax rate.
Select Component as Separate Order Line in component details and associate it with a (probably hidden) product. When you do this, that component can use the Tax rate for the Associated Product.
This won't give you a detailed VAT breakdown (Actinic doesn't do this on a per product basis) but the tax calculation will be correct.

Thanks Norman, I'll give it a go

Another way to do it is to use a custom VAT rate for those products, when you do this you basically enter the amount of VAT that should be charged for that product. On the reports / receipt etc the VAT rate is worked out for you.
