I've just moved server and I'm having problems uploading my site. The base files upload fine but when Actinics FTP client starts sending cataloge files a message pops up saying the connection has failed and then has to upload using HTTP.

Any ideas?

This can be issues with your ISP and may not be related to your new server.
Try setting the FTP retries to a greater value and extending the timeout.

Thanks a lot I'll give it a try.

'FTP options' is an inactive button within the my FTP client.

Then check 'Use Enhanced FTP' first.

I've doubled both settings and I'm still getting the same problem. As soon as the .cat files start uploading I get a loss in connection, Actinic then ask's if I want to retry and it lets a few more files through before dropping again.
I run another site on the same computer and there is no problem. So I know it's not my ISP.

another potential solution is to compact database, change script id and try again

We had this problem.
It was solved by completely resetting the directories on the domain.
Using Filezilla, we deleted everything on the domain, so it was virgin.
We then rebuilt the cgi-bin followed by the acatalog, also setting the permissions (755 for cgi-bin and 777 for acatalog) immediately after putting in each directory, before setting up the next.
Surprisingly, it worked. No more upload glitches at all, ever.

Actinic is notoriously deaf when listening to ftp commands from the server but is not always the only cause. Network firewalls can cause issues aswell but some things you should try.

Test using a dial up connection and see if it works ok.
run tracert from your command prompt to see if there are network problems between you and your server.
try it from another pc

and as Jo said, sometimes changing sctipt id can make all the difference

I have followed Jo's instructions and the upload is much better, unfortunatly there is still a problem though.

It's as if Actinic is causing the break in connection. When this happens I can't retreive emails & my website. But I can view my site from my phone and have also called a friend and they can view the site as well.

I have tried on another pc and still have the same problem.

I have used Smart FTP to upload large high res images to the server to test the connection and after half an hour of uploading all was fine.

As soon a I used Actinic's FTP I got the usual drop in connection.

I have taken my pc to a friends house who uses BT as their ISP and the uploads were faultless for four complete refreshes of the site.

I have taken the PC back home and out of four updates of the site three worked.

I'm using Virgin Media as my ISP.

Here's a big head spin as well. If I check my server Site folders, within my public_html folder there is only one folder, DD...... The files are all there but there is no cgi-bin folder etc....If I create a cgi-bin folder within the public_html folder and then double click on it, all of the correct files are within it. Then when I navigate out and then back into the public_html folder, the cgi_bin folder disappears again.

Sorry this is a bit heavy but I really need to get it off my chest before my head explodes.

I'm using Virgin Media as my ISP. virgin media are a trial at the mo. For several days last week i noticed my Skype connection constantly reconnecting.

I wonder if your problems are associated and your virgin connection keeps dropping out.... you could increase the FTP timeout

Having issues with Virgin too the last 10 days or so. Keeps dropping server connection and loosing my IP. I've also changed to Open DNS as well which is helping. Time they got it sorted out.

thanks for the comments Duncan, i posted my experience as pure speculation so its interesting to hear i am not alone.

When i think of it the worst few days were the week before last, mid week. i\ even resorted to rebooting modem and router but it certainly went on for many days. (nothing to report from last week as i was on my hols!) so lets see what this week brings :)

I too use openDNS

I've lost count how many times I've rebooted the modem and router. I usually just release the router lease and then renew it which seems to help for a while.

Strangely sometimes (but not always) when it happens I run a continuous ping to my router to check if it's the cause and often it times out for a while and then returns correctly at 1ms. I check the router status and I can see that the Virgin IPs lost.

Perhaps I have an interference problem as well. Was fine a couple of weeks ago though. I've changed the wireless channel number but still the same. The modem logs lok normal. I was thinking of calling Virgin but can't be arsed to speak to some moron whos just going to tell me to do what I've already done.

Nice day out maybe I should just chill.

HUH! in the past 30 mins i've noticed my connection drop twice :(

On our server (UKFast), we have an 'html' directory, which I'm assuming is the same as your public_html.
The cgi-bin does not go inside there - it's located in the root directory.
Perhaps this might help ...

I've tried moving the relocating the cgi-bin outside of the public_html but I can't remember the ftp setting I need to change to point Actinic to it. I'll search the forum later.

I have had an upload problem for months now it's just that the whole problem got much worse recently.

Our host company have been really helpful even though the problem was nothing to do with them. They sent me this link:

winmtr.sourceforge.net (http://winmtr.sourceforge.net) (neat tool)

and asked me to run it against my IP Address.

The result was:
14% packet loss at amst-ic-1-as0-0.network.virginmedia.com

And this is when it's running fairly well, unlike 2 weeks ago.

I've contacted Virgin Media and they don't want to accept that there is a problem with their router. I hardly every get to complete site refresh. I'm forced to move ISP, BT will be in on Thursday.

I've had 2 weeks of head spinning.

Sounds like a nightmare. That 14% packet loss is outrageous!

We've been with Zen Internet since 2003 - never a moments trouble.
We also have an extra on our telephone line from BT - it's called Total Care or something. It only cost an extra tenner a quarter, but they guarantee a 4-hour response to a (business) phone line fault. Essential I think.

I'd bin Virgin Media without hesitation. They may be cheaper, but then you don't get the service.
Zen specifically target the business market, charge more, but you get the service.
Our line with them gives us 448000 upload and 7616000 down, constant and it tests as such too.

You may find posting in the chetnet forums will get you some assistance in getting the Virgin router problem sorted: http://www.chetnet.co.uk/portal/forum/

I have had 'unofficial' assitance in the past from some very helpful people there.
