Shipping not showing

When i start from a fresh and add an item (or different ones to boost qty) the shipping does not show until getting to checkout, but after that shipping is always showing in the cart, i cannot remember it being like this have i changed something? so even if i carry on shopping the min cart up top will not show the true total until checkout but after that it's ok first time around

Sounds normal, it doesn't know your location or chosen shopping method until you checkout, so putting anything up before this would be a wild guess at best on a lot of stores. It's Ok after used for the first time as the cookie recalls what you did last time and uses that as the default.

You could set it up to 'Request Location Information Early' so that when a customer first adds a product to basket it asks where they want to deliver their items to so it can then work out the shipping straight away. You have to have your shopping mode for all sections set to 'Quantity on confirmation page' to be able to use this option (Business Settings | Ordering).
