Hi there, when I try to upload my site, to a test directory,I am getting the following error:
"Unable to move to the cgi-bin directory "cgi-bin/" on the FTP server.
The specified directory does not exist or you do not have access to the directory"
I have checked the file permissions are correct and that perl runs okay from the cgi-bin successfully & I am able to FTP into the site, and actinc sees the directories. Here are my settings:

have you run the wizard to let it find the cgi bin for you and thus populate paths for you
who is the host, and what package have you bought

LOL She's back :D
Morning Anne-Marie
Have you searched for that error and applied the suggested fixes? Firewalls, folder permissions (777 & 755), etc?
Have you done a network test? Have you searched the forum for the network settings of your host, to see if they match?
If you have done all of these things, then you need to put that information in your OP, otherwise people will assume that you've not done the hard work before posting.
We know you're under the kosh here, but you've spent most of the week asking questions that really 1/2 day-day sat with a designer would have sorted. You'd have, also, a better understanding of the software and how to use the community/KB/help files.

You don't need to create a test directory - Actinic will do this for you if you select Test mode from the Web menu

This is very true.
Also, the site I'm working on at the moment has two".." compared with your single "."

Hi, yip i'm back (for more punishment!:o) the host is indeed Memset.
I have checked the permissions on the directories and they seem to be ok 755 and 777 respectively.
When I use the Wizard, it get to the stage of telling actinic where the cgi-bin and directory are and I get the:
"An error occurred while sending an http request to the web server. Please contact etc..."
My paths are as follows:
PATH TO CGI-BIN directory - /public_html/thecreativefoundry.co.uk/cgi-bin (this is working as I have uploaded a test.cgi to this directory.
WEB ROOT DIRECTORY - /public_html/thecreativefoundry.co.uk/testshop
Oddly enough there is also a cgi-bin in the public_html directory which is:
/public_html/cgi-bin!

the path to the cgi-bin will depended on your ftp account and what areas of the server it has access to.
i always recommend creating a new ftp account that only has access to your site root area, then you dont need all the extra info in the paths, the settings rich has posted will then probably be successfull

Forward slash "/" missing in front of "Path to CGI-BIN"?
Rich Brady

darren, should the Path to Perl Shell be "bin" or "cgi-bin"?
Darren B
26-Nov-2009, 11:51 AM
Oddly enough there is also a cgi-bin in the public_html directory which is:
/public_html/cgi-bin!
Just spotted this bit, thats becuase your settings were wrong
Your cgi-bin should be under the public_html and so should the acatalog directory, using settings with long paths results in actinic not knowing were to find the correct directories
your directory structure should be
public_html
-------- cgi-bin
-------- acatalog
therefore richs settings should work, but you need to create a new FTP account which only has access to the public_html, and make the changes he has suggested
now if this is a nix server (being its using public_html) then the the path the perl is probably /usr/bin/perl but you need to check this with your host

Hi again folks :)
Okay, in my cpanel, i've created a new ftp account, which only gives me access to the root. Connecting via the wizard, all seems fine like so:
http://i49.tinypic.com/2utp6wl.jpg
This gets me to this point:
http://i45.tinypic.com/34rx5ap.jpg
If I click next, I get this:
http://i48.tinypic.com/25q3xaa.jpg
If I 'point' to the cgi-bin like this:
http://i49.tinypic.com/25ahf9u.jpg
I still get the same error :( I have checked that the cgi-bin runs scripts etc and that the acatalog and cgi-bin have got the correct permissions, what next?
Thanks again :)

What permissions are you using? 777 & 755?
Can I suggest you don't use the wizard to set up your network settings. Just import the settings I posted.
Darren B

STOP
you have setup ftp access to the whole root on your server, not the domain name you are trying to upload to. Looking at your screen shot i see you have mulltiple domains under one account.
setup an ftp account that only has access to thecreativefoundry.co.uk when you create it the directory should say /public_html/thecreativefoundry.co.uk/
then use this ftp account for this site only
Now you should have a cgi-bin under this directory on your server. Im guessing here these directories were created using the addon domains under your control panel not with an ftp program?
if youi created them with an ftp program then it is unlikely to work.
can you confirm if you using cpanel?

yes I phoned and asked them this morning, they said it would be fine, and it is a linux server, so in theory it should be okay.

Why not forget your company's Memsnet account for the moment and do this:
http://community.actinic.com/showthread.php?t=45510
If you can get the site working on Actinic's servers, you might be able to move forward.
I mean, come on, it's not rocket science. If it were as difficult as you're finding it, no-one would ever bother would they. Actinic works. End of.

Anne Marie,
When you ftp into the server, is the cgi-bin directory sitting there in the root or is it in another directory such as /public_html/ ?
If it's in the public_html directory then the ftp path has to include that. i..e
PATHTOCGIBIN /cgi-bin/
Should be /public_html/cgi-bin/

can we go back a bit here
Mike is correct if you are using the maindomain url you would include the public_html, but looking at your settings you have lots of addon domains under the master account, so in this instance the path must not include public_html because you are now using a ftp account that only access this addon domain.
But i need to know if you have a cgi-bin folder under the thecreativefoundry.com/ folder?
i also asked if this domain was setup using the control panel and created by adding a domain? if you did not then this will not work, the server needs to build the required paths and it does this when you add a domain. Creating a folder manually using an ftp program will not work

OMG is this still going on, for crying out loud lol. Aren't there any designers at your place with actinic experience?
Darren B
26-Nov-2009, 03:48 PM
Mike & Anne
The cgi-bin under the public_html is for the main account, normally each addon domain would have there own cgi-bin which would be sited under each of the addon domains, these addon domians show as folders on the server. This is were the problem comes from, addon domains must be added to the server the correct way, creating a folder will not create the cgi-bin or the correct paths to it, so in essence the server wont run scripts for these sites.

Very interesting (and amazing) thread, as I have been battling most of the day with a similar problem, which was giving the same responses. The solution in the end was to ignore the wizard, and look at my network settings for another site on the same server. In my case, clicking on the Server Tree in the wizard produced:
PATHFROMCGITOCATALOG rootfolder/acatalog/
when I changed it to
PATHFROMCGITOCATALOG ../acatalog/
it all worked. Conclusion: the wizard doesn't always know best and I know how frustrated Anne Marie feels - you guys have had the patience of saints today (I didn't even have time to visit the forum).
