Hosting and SSL

Hi,

I am looking to setup a site and could do with a little direction... firstly can anybody recommend a hoster, and second I am a little confused about SSL. Do I need a SSL certficate? what every ones of those are or is shared SSL the way to go?

Please help I am mainly confused about the SSL issue.
