Unable to add more products

We have been using Ver 6 for some time and everything has been fine, until now. When trying to add further products to the site we are being told that the product numbers are not unique and that there is already a file with that name in use. We have even tried bogus numbers etc. but the same message appears.
Any ideas guys.
