Whats with all the skinned pussy jokes?

Anyway, I noticed a search for a video title from Google on Friday, ten minutes later an order for said item is placed. Sorted. I thought I'd share that with you all.

*cough*
moving on......

I've noticed hit terms followed by sales too. Gratifying to say the least! If nothing else, watching hittail is compulsive viewing!

Hi, this is the creator of HitTail.

There have been a few questions as to how HitTail differs from AWStats, Google Analytics and other tools.

Let me know if you would like some of the internals of HitTail described, to understand how the "Suggestions" actually improve over time.

I would certainly appreciate more depth Mike. Do you see hittail as mainly a tool for writing blog style articles or FAQ's?

It seems to me that it is aimed at pulling in the traffic that is 'circling around' the site, not those looking directly for the core products. Maybe finding those searchers who don't always type the optimum search string?

Sure. To put it briefly, HitTail is designed to start filtering out every search term that has ever led to your site, so you only start looking at keywords that are entirely new. That's what makes the HitTail suggestions so unique and different from the often time-intensive duplicate keyword consideration of mining log files using such tools as AWStats.

Think about every hit that has ever occurred becoming part of the filter for every hit that will ever occur.

You now only focus on the good stuff.

We reduce all the activity on your website to about 5% of 5% (a quarter of a percent) of what should be considered for new writing suggestions.

It works best with blogging software, because blogging software creates long-page versions of content, in the form of index and archive pages. Because a words from a post from near the beginning of the month combines with words from a post from near the end of the month (they're both on the same page in the archive, remember), you get word combinations you never thought of, but they're dead-on topic.

So while the process plays off of content that is already on your site, HitTail does sort of spiral outwards content-wise, challenging the site owner to pay attention to concepts that the searchers are looking for.

When someone finds your site, but finds you buried say 5 pages in the results, it tells you 2 things.

1: You CAN be found on that topic, and there is actual search activity there.

2. There are probably 4 pages of trash ahead of you that didn't satisfy that searcher.

And since that hit was probably a coincidence, the moment you deliberately target it in an already search-optimized system (like blogging software), you pretty typically catapult yourself to the first page of results on that topic.

Rinse and repeat.
